Emerald, Birthstone Of May

Emerald Beads

Emerald, the birthstone of May is a precious gemstone. These are rare and extremely precious. These stunning green colored gemstones can appeal anyone easily. It is said that emeralds can also be worn to cure many astrological issues besides being used as part of a jewelry article. An emerald is one of the most expensive gemstones in the world. As it falls under the category of precious gemstones and has a limited availability in the market, a real and authentic emerald is very difficult to find.

The Egyptians were famous to carve Emeralds with the mark for flora to symbolize everlasting youth, and to bury these jewels with their dead.  The ancient Romans associated this gemstone with fertility and rebirth, and dedicated it to Venus, the goddess of love and beauty.

The Emerald is a member of the beryl family of minerals.  The green crystals grow slowly within metamorphic rocks and are restricted in size by the rock, making large Emeralds rare and costly.  Although this gemstone is relatively hard and durable, it must be protected from blows because the inclusions found within make it susceptible to breaking.

Unlike other beryls, emeralds usually contain inclusions and other flaws. These flaws are not looked on as negative aspects for emerald like they would be Even artificial emeralds often contain flaws, however, as the process of growing artificial emeralds mimics the way nature does it (slow crystal growth from a molten mix).for other gemstones. Indeed, these flaws are considered part of the character of the stone and are used to assure the purchaser of a natural stone.

Some people believe that wearing an Emerald brings wisdom, growth, and patience. And as any couple in a long-term relationship would agree, all of these qualities are essential for a successful and lasting love.  This may explain why a gift of Emerald for an anniversary — or anytime — is considered symbolic of love and fidelity.

Nearly all emeralds, even many natural stones, have been treated to improve clarity, generally by immersing them in oil. For gemstones, a green colored oil is sometimes used, “improving” the color as well. Unfortunately, this oil may evaporate over the years, making flaws appear where none were visible at the time of purchase.  A high-grade mineral oil may be used to improve the appearance again.
